Tamang Gumba as popularly known to all as a heritage Gumba situated at the heart of Darjeeling town is actually called the “Tashi Dargayling Monastery”. The Tamang Nepali Indian Buddhist Community had felt the necessity to erect “Tamang Gumba”, of its own in the year 1923. The first historical general meeting of the Tamang community was held on Sunday, 10th June 1923 at Bhutia Busty Buddhist Gumba (Monastery), Darjeeling under the able president ship of Mr. W. Ladenla and was attended by more than 60 people. With hardship and dedication and with the blessing of Lord Buddha within a span of three years time, they have collected money from the devotees of Buddhism from Darjeeling District, Dooars and Sikkim to buy the land under Darjeeling Municipality and built up the monastery named "Tashi Dargayling Monastery" way back in 1926. It is known through old records that many highly revered Rinporche's from Lhasa, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim were present and blessed at the consecration ceremony of the Monastery while it was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Sir Probhas Chandal Meena Keti, C.I.E.
History says that His Holiness the Dalai Lama had graced this Monastery by his august visit. Similarly the Maharaja of Nepal and Maharaja of Burdwan were also kind enough to visit the Monastery.
According to the time and circumstances of those days, the aims and objectives set by the Association for its activities were as the followings:
1. To bring together members of community living around unknown to each other.
2. To offer help at the time of distress
3. To dispose the unclaimed dead bodies.
4. To invite Lamas for discourses and propagation of Buddhism.
5. To bring out the future Lamas from among the promising small children.
6. To work for social upliftment.
7. To safeguard the interest of the Tamang community, culture, religion, rituals, and language of Buddhists.
8. To organize religious functions. |
