Tamang Gumba as popularly known to all as a heritage Gumba situated at the heart of Darjeeling town is actually called the “Tashi Dargayling Monastery”. The Tamang Nepali Indian Buddhist Community had felt the necessity to erect “Tamang Gumba”, of its own in the year 1923. The first historical general meeting of the Tamang community was held on Sunday, 10th June 1923 at Bhutia Busty Buddhist Gumba (Monastery), Darjeeling under the able president ship of Mr. W. Ladenla and was attended by more than 60 people. With hardship and dedication and with the blessing of Lord Buddha within a span of three years time, they have collected money from the devotees of Buddhism from Darjeeling District, Dooars and Sikkim to buy the land under Darjeeling Municipality and built up the monastery  named "Tashi Dargayling Monastery" way back in 1926. It is known through old records that many highly revered Rinporche's from Lhasa, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim were present and blessed at the consecration ceremony of the Monastery while it was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Sir Probhas Chandal Meena Keti, C.I.E.

History says that His Holiness the Dalai Lama had graced this Monastery by his august visit. Similarly the Maharaja of Nepal and Maharaja of Burdwan were also kind enough to visit the Monastery.

According to the time and circumstances of those days, the aims and objectives set by the Association for its activities were as the followings:

1.         To bring together members of community living around unknown to each other.
2.         To offer help at the time of distress
3.         To dispose the unclaimed dead bodies.
4.         To invite Lamas for discourses and propagation of Buddhism.
5.         To bring out the future Lamas from among the promising small children.
6.         To work for social upliftment.
7.         To safeguard the interest of the Tamang community, culture, religion, rituals, and language of Buddhists.
8.         To organize religious functions.

       Sect

We belong to Ningmapa Sect of Buddhism. We have around 30 monks in the monastery and few of them are small lamas who are under training to read the holy book “Phustak”.  Recently Rev. Gaylong Narbu Ts. Moktan is appointed as the head Monk of the monastery, by the committee in consultation with Hon'ble Jathal Rimporchey.

       Major Annual Activities

Our main activity is to Celebrate “Buddha Purnima”, the birth celebration of Lord Buddha. Buddhist thoughout the World commemorate this sacred day connected with the three Great Events of the life of the Buddha-Birth, Enlightment and Maha Parinibbana. On this holy day we take out the long procession covering mainly the town area with Buddha Statue, monks in their costumes, playing Ghayling (holy musical instrument) and more than the 1000 people carries “Phustak” (Holy Book) on their head through out the procession along with 5000-7000 devotees and on the same day we feed atleast 12000-13000 people a “Cho” (holy feed).

Besides these we organize a “Khangoor” (a holy prayer with 60 monks for 9 days continuously for the well beings of the people and world peace, where millions of mantras chant) in the monastery.

We celebrate the birth of “Guru Rinpochey” during every 'full moon' and the 'dark moon' as we believe Guru Rimporchey changes his incarnation during these periods for the peace, welfare of human beings and animals with blessings.
